Overview

So you've brought that gorgeous bundle of cuteness home and everyone's excited about the new puppy. You have the crate, collar, leash, food and LOTS of toys. Now what?

Puppy love only goes so far when your new family member whines, chews your furniture, pees in the house, jumps on everyone and sinks those needle like teeth into hands, feet and anything else that moves!

Whose idea was this pup anyway?

We mostly think of Puppy Training in terms of teaching them how to do things - sit, stay, lie down etc. All good, important stuff.

In reality, puppy training begins as soon as puppy comes home with you and it's a constant, consistent education. You're teaching your puppy how you want them to be and how to behave in and out of your home environment.

My in-home Puppy Training program consists of three one-on-one sessions, scheduled as needed in your pup's first year and as much email or phone coaching as you need.

I like to get started with puppy clients within the first 2-3 weeks of you bringing them home. That gives enough time for bonding and for you to get a feel for your pup's personality and the habits they're developing. In our initial session, we cover all the typical puppy topics - housetraining, sleeping arrangements, feeding and puppy proofing your home. I also teach you how to teach your pup - correcting bad behaviour and encouraging good behaviour - all done in a way that your puppy instinctively understands. We'll also start on some basic obedience skills, which we'll build on over time.

By 5-6 months, your pup is the equivalent of a pre-teen, with all the accompanying traits! There's usually some push back in the willingness department, as he/she gains confidence and works to establish their place in the family hierarchy. This is a great time for session number two, where we work on any errant behaviours that have crept in and determine the best motivations for them to be the great dog you know they can be. We also work on more advanced obedience training.

The final session is usually recommended for around 11-12 months, when that sweet little puppy may well be acting out like a typical teenager. Since every dog and every training session is different, I work to accommodate whatever your needs are - in and out of the home, on walks or at the dog park.

Having an understanding of your dog from a very young age and establishing rules, boundaries and bonding throughout their first year makes an enormous difference to their evolution into adulthood.

It's incredibly fulfilling for me to guide a pup and her people through that first formative year. And, of course I'm on hand for any questions, quirks or coaching when they're full grown too!

My Puppy Training program includes 3 sessions and costs $800.
